Darwinism
Developed for the theory that humans evolve from apes, contributed though the rise in scientific advancements, leaving people feeling disillusioned with religion. Hyde is the physical embodiment of an animalistic force suggesting that his “ape-like fury” is inherited and can’t be irradiated
Freud’s theory
Hyde is symbolised as having an id-controlled mind, as he is animalistic and acts as a menace to society, on the other hand Hyde’s characteristics are juxtaposed by the well respected Jekyll who acts wholesome and a way that is socially accepted, therefore holding a ego based mind.
Physiognomy
Where someone’s appearance dictates their entire personality, The appearance of abnormality was an implication that there was something wrong according to god and nature. Stevenson’s portrayal of Hyde confirms this. His callous nature is depicted from his deformed-like figure. This is reinforced by the revolt and disgust that Hyde evokes in society “so ugly it brought the sweat on me like running”.
Stevenson’s intentions
Temptation is a crux in this novella, and Stevenson’s achieves warning his audience about the consequences of indulging into desires.
