How can artwork be restored?

A

Use of low pressure airbrushing, dry sponging, powder cleaners, moist brush or cotton swabs.

May require re-framing

How do the characteristics of glazed and unglazed ceramics differ?

A

Glazed = resistant to heat and non-porous
Unglazed/glazed at low temp. = not resistant to heat, is porous

Dry clean unglazed or worn. Clean with alkaline solution or by using ultrasonic tank

How can kitchenware be restored?

A

Using ultrasonics, alkaline and de-greasing solutions

Generally robust and responds well to cleaning techniques.

Untreated wood and plastic prone to odor retention & staining-likely to be BER

How can documents and books be restored?

A

Wear cloth gloves to handle books.
Pages-dry sponging, abraision with soft india rubber erasers or fine sandpaper on blocked page ends
Covers-dry sponge absorbent material. Carefully damp wipe glossy covers. Specialist leather clean.

Discoloured or brittle paper is not reversible.

How can recorded media be restored?

A

Wear cloth gloves. Clean discs with alkaline detergent & rinse with deionised water.

A

Dry sponge the label. Clean grooves with fine record brush and neutral detergent. Rinse with deionised water.

How would you deal with misc. items affected by water?

A

Inspect for potential shrinkage, mould, degrading of decorative finishes and whether electrically unsafe. Discuss value with owner and independently verify.

Restoration must be cost effective.
