Content Flashcards
What is RAM?
High speed, volatile memory(Random Access Memory)
What is Volatile memory?
Temporary memory
What is non volatile memory?
Permanent memory
What is virtual memory?
Secondary Storage used as extra RAM
What happens when applications are opened?
RAM fills with data
What happens when RAM is full?
It moves data that hasn’t been used recently to Secondary Storage(Virtual memory)
What is ROM?
Read Only Memory(Non-volatile memory)
What is clock speed?
The number of instructions a single processor core can carry out per second(Hz)
What happens when clock speed is increased?
They number of instructions carried out per second increases
What is Cache?
Data storage inside the CPU that’s much faster then RAM
What happens if a computer has too little RAM?
Decreased performance due to more regular use of Virtual memory
What is a GPU?
Graphics processing units are special circuits for handling graphics and image processing
What is Primary Storage?
The memory areas that the CPU can access very quickly (CPU Regusters, cache, ROM, RAM)
What are Hard disk drives?
HDDs are the traditional internal storage in PCs and laptops- they are often known as hard drives
What is one advantage of portable HDDs?
Popular for backing up and transporting large amounts of data
What is a SSD(Solid state drive)?
Storage devices with no moving parts
What are Optical Discs?
Things like CDs,DVDs, and Blu-ray discs
What is the OS(Operating System)?
Manages Hardware and runs softwares
What are device drivers used for?
Let’s the OS and Hardware talk to each other
What is a user interface?
Allows the user to interact with a computer system
What does compression software do?
Reduces the size of files by permanently or temporarily removing data from them
What is encryption software?
Is scrambled data to stop third parties from accessing it
Give one benefit of encryption software
If data is intercepted it can’t be understood making your data more secure
What is a bit?
A single binary digit(1 or 0)
