Contemporary literature was divided into 5 periods:
- The Rebirth of Freedom (1946-1970)
- Period of Activism (1970-1972)
- Period of New Society (1972-1980)
- Period of the Third Republic (1981-1985)
- Current Period (1986-1999)
The Rebirth of Freedom (1946-1970)
-Proliferation of newspapers,
-more readers in English
-Poetry, novel and short stories were written in English
-Palanca Awards - was launched and headed by Carlos Palanca Sr. in 1950
Period of Activism (1970-1972)
-According to Pociano Pineda, youth activism was due to domestic and worldwide cases
-Activism relates to the history of Filipino youth
-Literary Revolution: Youth became completely rebellious, campus newspapers showed rebellious emotions
Period of New Society (1972-1980)
-Focused on the development/progress of the country
-Filipino film festivals were launched
- Poem themes: patience, native culture, customs and beauties of nature and surroundings
- Radio continued to be patronized
Period of the Third Republic (1981-1985)
-“The New Republic of the Philippines” as called by former Pres. Marcos
-Poems were romantic and revolutionary
-Filipino songs themes: grief, poverty, aspirations for freedom, love of God, of country and fellowmen
Current Period (1986-1999)
newspapers became instant opposition papers overnight
