Why are people prejudiced?
Ignorance/fear- people do not understand their culture or religion.
Influences- Prejudice is an ongoing cycle that can be passed on from one generation to the next.
Experience- People can be prejudiced against a group if they have suffered a bad experience from one of them.
Scapegoating- If things aren’t going their way, or if there is something wrong in society, people often look for someone to blame.
Media- some media outlets may be biased with regards to certain issues
Characteristics of discrimination
An action-physical assault.
Direct- physically attacking someone.
Caused by a person with negative beliefs towards other people or group- laws in America at the time of Martin Luther King.
Caused by an organisation- work based discrimination.
Indirect- not getting the job because of a woman’s maternity leave.
Deeply held negative beliefs and stereotypes- sectarian views held that are passed onto children.
Causes of local and national poverty
Lack of jobs.
High costs.
Low income.
Housing costs.

Debt.
Poor health.
Lack of education.
Homelessness.

Weather.
War/civil arrest.
Unfair trade.
Unfair distribution.

Who is responsible for those in need?
Government-offers jobs and housing.
Income support, Child support, Tax credits.
Has policies to help those in need.
Church- helps with the community.
Aims to help those in need-outreach.
Charities- Salvation Army and food banks.
Individual- can help those in the local area- community work.
Volunteer work.
Everyone has a role to play to make society better.
Short term aid
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages-
Provides immediate assistance during emergencies.
Can boost morale and create a sense of solidarity among nations or communities.
Can address critical needs like food, shelter and medical care efficiently.
Disadvantages-
May not address the root causes of the use, leading to a dependency on continuous aid rather than sustainable solutions.
Can sometimes be inefficiently allocated or mismanaged.
Short term aid might create a cycle of dependency and hinder local development efforts.
Long term aid.

Advantages-
Promoting sustainable development and addressing underlying issues.
Focuses on solving problems in a way that prevents their recurrence such as through continuous programs like education or building dams for clean water.
Aims to improve standards of living and contribute to long lasting positive impacts on communities.
Disadvantages-
Might become dependant on aid.
Potential inefficiencies in aid allocation.
Might not challenge the root of the problem effectively.
May lead to a reliance on external assistance rather than fostering self sufficiency within communities.
Limited impact or misallocation of resources if done incorrectly.
