What is meant by the term: Stereotyping?
The assumption that a person shares all the characteristics of a group to which it is assumed they belong.
What is meant by the term: Prejudice?
To pre-judge and is a negative attitude towards people based solely to a group to which they belong. It is based on an unfounded or unreasonable opinion. This means making an assumption about someone before knowing them.
What is meant by the term: Discrimination?
When people are treated unfairly by others because of prejudice. It is a negative action towards a group and results in unequal treatment.

What is racism?
A form of discrimination where people are deliberately pre-judged and mistreated because they belong to a particular race or because of the colour of their skin.
What are the three main functions of the ‘Commission for Racial Equality’?
- To eliminate racial discrimination and promote equal opportunities.
- To encourage good relations between those who come from different backgrounds.
- To continually review the way the act is working and make recommendations for improvement.
What is the definition for religion prejudice?
The belief that a person is inferior because they have different religious beliefs or no religious beliefs at all.
What is sectarianism?
Religious inequality.
What is the ‘Corrymeela Community’?
A group of Christian in N.I both Protestant and Catholic who believe they have been called together as the ‘Instrument’s of God’s Peace’. They encourage reconciliation and peace-building.
What is gender discrimination?
Treating someone unfairly because of their sex.
Name an example of gender inequality today;
The role of women in the Christian church as men have always traditionally been leaders and priests while women can only be nuns or religious sisters.
What is a disability?
A physical or mental impairment, which has a significant and long-term negative effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
Give some examples of disabilities:
Loss of sight, hearing and speech, loss of mobility, learning disabilities, metal illnesses.
What has the Equality Act (2010) done? What does it require?
Made it unlawful to discriminate against anyone because of a mental or physical disability. It requires equal treatment in access to employment as well as private and public services.
