Structural diversity
The diversity of contemporary family and household structures with the conventional family. This is known as the cornflake family based in the image advertisers often show nuclear families
Neo-conventional families
Robert Chester suggests that family diversity has been exaggerated because of the way statistics are interpreted. While the proportion of households that are not conversational families is quite high the proportion of people not living in conversational families is much lower
Births outside marriage
The new right is concerned about the rise in the proportion of conceptions and births outside marriage. In 2012 nearly half of all babies were born outside marriage
Ethic groups
Families with different religions beliefs or cultures tend to favour different family structures
Social class
Charles Murray suggests that unskilled young men were unwilling to take uninspiring work, so that the mothers of their children were better off on benefits than marrying them

Eversley and Bonnerjea found distinctive types of families according to region. Two parents, upwardly-mobile families are attracted to the affluent south
