Conflict
Disagreement caused by actual or perceived opposition of needs, values and interests between people.
Challenge
A task or issue which is provocative, threatening, stimulating or an incitement to debate. Often allows alternative views to be expressed.
Identity
Common set of attitudes and experiences
Ideology
Sets of ideas about how a society should be
Ethnicity
Having a separate identity through religion, race or language.
Culture
Sharing language, arts, values and behaviour
Wealth/resources
Differing levels of wealth and resources.
Localism
Where issues or values bring local people together, such as against government closures of local services.
Regionalism
Where, for example, one region tries to take control of functions from a national government.
Nationalism
Where a particular country asserts its dominance over other people or nations. A belief in the value of a nation and its sense of identity for a population.
Territorialism
Where a geographical area is defined for a particular purpose, such as the exploration of oil.
Geopolitics
Study of the ways in which political discussions and processes affect the way space and resources are used. Relationship between geography, economics and politics.
Multiculturalism
Where significant numbers differ from the majority population in terms or language, customs, festivals, food dress or religious belief.

Poverty
The inability to afford basic things such as safe drinking water, food, shelter, sanitation, healthcare and education.
GNP per capita
Total value of all the goods and services produced by a country in a year including income from foreign investments, divided by total population.
GDP per capita
Total value of all the goods and services produced by a country in a year divided by total population.
Separatism
A move by a minority group toward greater independence and autonomy.

Eight UN targets to be achieved by 2015 to tackle global poverty.
Economic Security
Stable and sustainable economy where individuals have a reliable basic income.
Food security
Access to a reliable source of sufficient food.
Health security
Protection from diseases and access to healthcare.
Personal, community and political security
Being protected from violence, crime and human rights abuses.
