Contamination And Irradiation Flashcards
Radioactive Contaminantion
The unwanted presence of a radioactive isotope on other materials. This hazard is due to the decay of contaminating atoms releasing gamma, alpha or beta radiation. The type if radiation emitted effects the type of hazards.
Irradiation
Irradiation takes place if an object is exposed to a source that is emitting radiation. This can ionise the atoms in your cells. This leads to cell damage, mutation and ultimately cancer.
How to reduce the risk of becoming contaminated while handling radioactive sources?
•using tongs
•spending limited time around the radioactive isotope
How to reduce the risk of being irradiated?
•wearing gloves
•Shielding (using led lined boxed)
•goggles
