Tank car will be cylindrical stateless or aluminum tanks with rounded heads.
Normally carry flammable gases, non-flammable, or poison gases.
Loaded/unloaded from the top.
Capacity: 4000-40,000 gal.
PSI: 100-600
Pressure tank cars
Will have no pressure or low pressure ranging from 60-100 psi.
Capacity: 4000-40,000 gal.
Non Pressure tank cars
Tank car made up of 2 tanks with insulation between. Usually white. Commonly carries liquid gases. Refrigerated at -130F / -90C and below Pressure: 25 psi or less
Cryogenic liquid tank car
Containers switch between ship, rail, or truck while staying in container
Intermodal
Capacity: not more than 6300 gal.
Pressure: 25.4 - 100psi
Hazard classes: 3,4,5,6,8
Transports hazardous & non-hazardous materials/WMD, toxic, alcohols, pesticides, insecticides.
IM-101 (IMO Type 1)
Capacity: won’t exceed 6300 gal.
Pressure: 14.5 - 25.4psi
Hazard classes: 3,6,8
Used to transport whiskey and wine.
IM-102 (IMO Type2)
Capacity: 5500 gal.
Pressure: gases liquified under 100-500psi
Hazard classes: 2,3
Transports: LPG, anhydrous ammonia
Pressure Intermodal tank container
Capacity: 4500-5000 gal.
Pressure: 25 psi or less.
Hazard class: 2.2
Transports: helium, nitrogen, oxygen
Cryogenic Intermodal Tanks (IMO Type 7)
High pressure cylinders mounted in an Intl Std Org frame.
Capacity: Varies
Pressure: 3000-5000 psi
Hazard class: 2
Tube Modules
Capacity: max. of 1500 cu ft. Pressure: greater than 80 psi Hazard class: 5.1, 9 Transports fertilizers, oxidizers, grains, food products. Known as "hopper trailers" "V" shaped bins. Pneumatically unloaded
Dry Bulk cargo tanks- truck
Capacity: 10,000 gal Pressure: 3-5 psi Hazard class: 3 Large oval ends/ elliptical cross sections May contain any liquid. Underbelly outlets Rollover rail entire length Gas stations
Non-Pressure liquid cargo tanks (DOT 406, SCT 306) Trucks
Capacity: 2000-7000 gal. Pressure: 18 psi 100F, low pressure is less than 40 psi 170F. Hazard classes: 3,8 Round cylindrical or horseshoe shape. Double shelled w/ insulation.
Low pressure chemical tanks (DOT 407, SCT 307) truck
Capacity: 5000-6000 Pressure: 35-50 psi Hazard class: 8 Reinforced ribs Inside can be coated w/ a black tar like material to protect surface from contents.
Corrosive liquid cargo tank (DOT 412, SCT 312) truck
Capacity: 2500-11,500 gal. Pressure: 100-500 psi Hazard class: 2 Hemispherical or ellipisoidal ends or head Transports liquified compressed gas
High pressure cargo tanks (MC 331) truck
Pressure: 3000-5000 psi
Hazard class: 2
Transports: bulk non-liquified compressed gases.
Multiple cylinders stacked and permanently mounted to trailer.
All cylinders contain same material.
