contact process Flashcards
what is the main stage for contact process
oxidation of sulfur dioxide -> sulfur trioxide
2SO2 + O2 ⇌ 2SO3
-> this process is exothermic
catalyst use in contact process
vanadium(V) oxide, V2O5
temperature
450 ºC
pressure
2 atm
why temperature
The forward reaction is exothermic,
-> So increasing the temperature shifts the position of equilibrium to the left in the direction of the reactants
-> the higher the temperature, the lower the yield of sulfur trioxide
-> however, low temperature = low rate of reaction
-> 450 = balance between higher temperature + low equilibrium yield at high temperature
why pressure
- High pressures can be dangerous and very expensive equipment is needed
- A higher pressure causes the sulfur dioxide to
+ position of equilibrium lies far to the right
what is the first stage
S + O2 -> SO2
what is oleum
H2S2O7
why SO3 shouldn’t put in water to produce H2SO4
mist of sulfuric acid would be produced
-> difficult to condense
-> highly dangerous
equation for creating sulfuric acid
H2O + H2SO7 → 2H2SO4
water + oleum -> sulfuric acid
