contact process Flashcards

1
Q

what is the main stage for contact process

A

oxidation of sulfur dioxide -> sulfur trioxide
2SO2 + O2 ⇌ 2SO3
-> this process is exothermic

Q

why temperature

A

The forward reaction is exothermic,
-> So increasing the temperature shifts the position of equilibrium to the left in the direction of the reactants
-> the higher the temperature, the lower the yield of sulfur trioxide
-> however, low temperature = low rate of reaction

-> 450 = balance between higher temperature + low equilibrium yield at high temperature

6
Q

why pressure

A
  • High pressures can be dangerous and very expensive equipment is needed
  • A higher pressure causes the sulfur dioxide to
    + position of equilibrium lies far to the right

Q

why SO3 shouldn’t put in water to produce H2SO4

A

mist of sulfuric acid would be produced
-> difficult to condense
-> highly dangerous
