Contact & Non-Contact Forces Flashcards
3 things forces can change?
- direction
- speed
- shape
What is a contact force?
Force which acts between objects which are touching
4 examples of contact forces?
- friction
- air resistance
- tension
- normal reaction
Frictions relationship with motion?
It opposes motion
How can friction be reduced?
Lubrication & smoothing surface
Air resistances relationship with motion?
Opposes motion
How does tension work?
When object is stretched, tension tries to bring it back to normal shape
What is the Normal Reaction?
When a force pushes one object into another, the second object always pushes back in the opposite direction which is always objects stand up
What is a non-contact force?
A force which acts between objects when they are NOT touching each other
3 examples of non-contact forces?
- magnetic
- electrostatic
- gravitational
How do electrostatic objects act?
Electrically charged objects attracted/repelled
How does a magnetic force work?
Like pulls repelled, unlike pulls attracted
How does the gravitational force work?
attracts, how planets orbit sun
