Consuming Energy Resources Flashcards
What are the three types of energy resources?
- Non-renewable
- Renewable
- Recyclable
What affects energy variation between countries?
- The more developed a country is, the greater its use of energy.
- A developing country is likely to use less energy but is also likely to rely in more traditional fuel sources.
- Where temperatures are low and daylight hours are short more energy is needed for heating and lighting.
How does geology affect access energy?
- Fossil fuels are only found in sedimentary rocks. coal is widely distributed but mostly in the Middle East.
- Countries on plate boundaries can access geothermal energy
How does climate and landscape affect access to energy?
- Areas with high rainfall and steep sided valleys can construct large dams and generate HEP.
- Exposed and coastal areas are good for generating wind power.
- Areas with longer hours of sunshine can produce solar energy
What is fracking?
A process that involves drilling into the earth using a high pressure water mixture to release gas trapped inside rock.
Why is global demand for oil increasing?
- increasing population means more people needing energy
- increasing levels of wealth means more consumptions of energy intensive goods
-rapid industrialisation in emerging countries means a growing wealth
What affects price of oil?
- wars
- economic recessions
- discovery of new sources
How does rising affluence change attitudes to energy futures?
- People wirh more money can afford to make a choice about energy usage
- Goverments in developed countries have more money to invest in public transport and renewable energy.
How does education change the attitudes to energy futures?
- People in developed countries have better education in school and the media so they have a better understanding of consequences of unsustainable energy use
How does environmental concerns change the attitudes to energy futures?
-increased access to education means people are more worried about permantely damaging the environment so they are more likely to reduce their carbon footprint
- Developed countries can afford to invest in research into the environmental impacts of energy sources creating awareness.
What is a carbon footprint?
A measure of the amount of greenhouse gases generated by the activities of an individual or organisation or product over its lifetime
What is an ecological footprint?
A measure of how much land is needed to support an individuals lifestyle.
