Consuming Energy Resources Flashcards
What are examples of recyclable energy
Reprocessed uranium
Negatives of coal mining
Expensive drilling and pumping technology
Produced green house gases
How does industrialisation increase energy consumption
Newly industrialising areas focus on manufacturing which uses high volumes of energy
How does energy consumption vary across the world
Low income countries have mainly primary economies which use small amounts of energy
How does demand affect oil prices
High demand causes prices to rise, and falling demand causes lower prices
Negatives and examples of unconventional extraction methods
Time consuming and expensive
Tar sands and fracking
Explain process of fracking
Cracks in and below earths surface are opened and widened by injecting water, chemicals and sand at high pressure which extracts the oil and gas
Negatives of unconventional extraction method such as fracking
Results in damage to habitat and increased water and air pollution
What are tar sands
Mixture of sand clay and water and bitumen
Bitumen is extracted from tar sands by injecting hot steam underground. This makes the bitumen less sticky so it can be pumped out.
Requires lots of energy and water
What are the two possibilities the IEA said how the global use of energy could be in the future
Business as usual
A sustainable future
What is business per usual
Assumes that the world will continue to rely on fossil fuels as the main source of energy
What does the possibility A sustainable future mean
More countries would adopt renewables and rely on mixed energy supplies in order to reduce co2 emissions
