Consumer Protection Act
The Consumer Protection Act 1986 seeks to promote and protect consumer interest through speedy and inexpensive redressal of their complaints.
It is applicable to all types of undertaking.

1.The consumer has the right to be safe from the products which are hazardous to life and health.
2. The consumer has all the rights to have complete information about the product they intend to buy.
3. The consumers have the right to choose between a variety of products at a competitive price.

Redressal agencies set up under the consumer protection act?
For the redressal of consumers complaints the consumer protection act provides a three tier enforcement machinery at the district, state and national levels.
known as the district consumer dispute redressal forum, state consumer disputes redressal commission and the national consumer disputes redressal commission.
The national commission is set up by the central government whereas the state and district is set up by the state government.
Who can file a complaint?
- Any consumer can file a complaint without the service of any advocates
- Any registered consumer association
- The central govt or any state govt
- One or more consumers on behalf of many
- Any legal representative of the deceased consumer
District forum
There are 644 district commissions in India. The district forum should consist of a president and two other members out of which one should be a women. A complaint can be made in the district forum when the value of goods does not exceed one crore. If needed the samples of the products will be sent to the laboratory. If the consumer is not happy with the order of the district forum he or she can appeal the state commission within 30 days of passing the order.
State Commission
There is a total of 365 state commission in India. Each state commission consist of one president and not less than 2 other members of which should be one women. The are appointed by the state government and a complaint can be filed if the value of the good is more than 1 crore and less than 10 crore. the appeals of the district forum can also be appealed here. In case the party is not satisfied with the order of the state commission they can appeal the national commission.
National commission
The national commission has territorial jurisdiction over the whole country. The national commission includes one president and at least 4 other members of which 1 should be a women. They are appointed by the central government. A complaint can be filed if the value of the goods cross 10 crores and the appeal of the state and district can be filed and it will be the last order for them. An order passed by the national commission if not pleased with it can be appealable before the supreme court.
