Constructive Landforms Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three landforms associated?
A
Oceanic ridges
Transform Faults
Rift Valleys
Volcanoes
2
Q
Characteristics of ocean ridges are?
A
- combined length of 60,000 km
- may feature a central valley.
- youngest part of the ocean.
- can reach 1 km in height.
- for example Mid-Atlantic Ridge
3
Q
How are ocean ridges formed?
A
- as plates pull apart, magma rises to surface as there is lower pressure.
- the magma cools down and solidifies.
- the hot crust expands to form a ridge.
- rough topography is formed, rifts and scarps.
4
Q
What are transform faults?
A
- they bisect the main ridge and are offset from the main ridge.
- they move out at different rates.
- created by crustal uplift and tectonization.
- shallow focus earthquakes occur
5
Q
Characteristics of rift valleys are?
A
- formed on continental/continental margins
- characterised by dropped down and uplifted sections of rocks, horsts and grabens.
- may have active volcanoes to evidence igneous activity.
- steep valley sides.
6
Q
How are rift valleys formed?
A
- spreading occurs, crust heats up and domes.
- the rocks crack and break up
- central sections drop down to form rift valleys.
- for example the Great African Rift Valley, with Mount Kilimanjaro and Lake Victoria in valley.
7
Q
How volcanoes form..
A
plates pull apart and magma rises to erupt on surface to form volcanoes land and submarine.
islands can form as they reach surface, e.g. Iceland, recently Surtsey.
