Construction Technology Flashcards
Give examples of types of substructure construction.
Strip foundation, pile foundation (secant and contiguous), raft, stepped footings.
What is the difference between secant and contiguous piles?
Secant are overlapping piles. They are stronger and better as retaining walls.
Contiguous are not overlapping, normally with some grout between them.
What is the purpose of the RIBA Plan of Works 2020?
Provides a standardised, framework for managing building projects from inception to completion.
How many RIBA Plan of Works stages are there?
Eight (Zero to Seven)
What are RIBA Plan of Works stages?
Stage 0: Strategic Definition
Stage 1: Preparation and Briefing
Stage 2: Concept Design -
Stage 3: Spatial Coordination
Stage 4: Technical Design
Stage 5: Manufacturing and Construction
Stage 6: Handover
Stage 7: Use
When was RAAC used?
1950s - 1990s
What is an Air Handling Unit?
Provides and circulates fresh, filtered air to a space. Incorporated into HVAC systems.
Name some types of air conditioning systems.
Variable Air Volume (VAV)
Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF)
Fan Coil Unit (Two/Four Pipe)
What is a VRF System?
Variable Refrigerant Flow (sometimes known as VRV which is a trademark of Daikin)
It is a split system
Uses refrigerant to heat and cool air
Multiple units will be placed in different zones with their own thermostats
What are advantages and disadvantages of VRF systems?
Advantages are space and energy efficient.
Disadvantage is that it requires higher levels of maintenance.
Does a Fan Coil Unit heat or cool?
A two pipe system only does one. A four pipe system does both.
How does a Fan Coil Unit work?
Uses water to heat (from a boiler) or cool (from chiller) the air.
It is not practical for tall buildings as high pressure needed to pump water up. It is relatively efficient.
What is a Variable Air Volume system?
Uses air to heat/cool spaces.
Not efficient and has large space requirements. Well suited to high rise buildings
