Platform Framing (Wood)
most commonly used framing in residential
Balloon Framing (Wood)
an alternative to platform framing. Considered illegal in NYS.
Footing
Lowest structural member. Located at bottom of foundation wall. Horizontal concrete, set in soil, supports the foundation wall.
Sill Plate
Horizontal wood sits on top of houses foundation. Used as nailing surface for floor system. Lowest horizontal beam (wood)
Studs
vertical wood used to construct walls
Joists
horizontal beams or timbers that support the floor.
Eave
part of a roof that meets or overhangs the walls of a building. Lowest part of the roof, projects beyond wall structure
Soffit
Area under roof extension
Fascia
Area of material facing outer edge of soffit
Pitch
the slope of the roof, driveway, sidewalk, etc.
Flashing
added to corners of exterior to prevent water from entering house
Sheating
cover interior/exterior walls. wood, vinyl, aluminum, bricks, gypsum boards.
Urea Formaldenhyde Foam Insulation (UFFI)
Foam insulation. Not used since 1980’s
R-Value
Measurement of ability of insulation.
great value, greater insulation power, thicker insulation.
CFC’s
used in refrigerators
