Gov by the people, both directly or indirectly, with free and frequent elections
Democracy
Gov where citizens vote on laws and select officials directly
Direct democracy
Gov where the people elect those who govern and pass laws (a republic)
Representative democracy
Gov the enforced limits on those who govern and allow the voice of the people to be heard through free, fair, and relatively frequent elections
Constitutional democracy
Set of arrangements, including checks/bal, federalism, sep of powers, rule of law, due process, bill of rights, that req our leaders to listen, think, bargain, and explain before they act or make laws. Then hold them politically/legally accountable for how they exercise powers
Constitutionalism
Idea that the rights of the nation are supreme over the rights of the individuals who make up the nation
Statism
Idea that a just gov must derive power from people
Popular consent
Governance according to the expressed pref of the majority
Majority rule
Candidate/party that wins more than half votes cast
Majority
Candidate/parity with the most votes (not necess more than HALF)
Plurality
Gov by religious leaders who claim divine guidance
Theocracy
1st governing document of the confederated states drafted in 1777 ratio in 1781 and replaced by the const in 1789
Articles of Confederation
Convention held in 1786 to consider probs of trade & naivigation- call to Congress and states for Constitutional Convention… was a failure in comparison (5 states showed up)
Annapolis Convention
Held in Philly- debated & agreed on the US Constitution
Constitutional Convention
Rebellion ruled by Daniel Shays- farmer- protest on mortgage foreslosures- highlighted need for stronger national gov- Constitutional Convention
