Define short stature?
Short stature is defined as a height below the 0.4th centile
What are the causes of short stature?
Familial
Delayed or early puberty
IUGR and prematurity (many recover height and weight)
Endocrine (hypothyroidism, GH deficiency, corticosteroid excess aka cushings or iatrogenic)
Inadequate nutrition to meet demands (chronic disease/issues with absorption/reduced intake)
Phycological distress (if not happy won’t reach potential)
Genetic/chromosomal (Silver russell syndrome, achondroplasia, turners)
What should worry you with regards to short stature?
Faltering growth
Other symptoms suggestive of a cause aka cushings moon face
How can you predict childs height based on parental measurements?
Mean of the father’s and mother’s height.
- 7cm added for a boy
- 7cm subtracted for a girl
= Mid parental target height
What are the important features of Silver-Russel Syndrome?
Short stature and asymmetrical limb length.
Failure to thrive
Cafe au lait spots
Triangular shaped head
Reflux
Kidney abnormalities
