Branches of government
The division of government into executive legislative and judicial branches
Amendment
An alteration or addition to a motion bill etc
Democracy
A form of government in which the supreme power lies with the people and is exercised directly by agents under a free electoral system
Judicial branch
Branch of gov that decided whether something is legal; at the Supreme Court lvl it decides whether something is constitutional ( follows with the values and intentions of the constitution )
Supreme Court
The highest most powerful court in the nation
Executive branch
Branch of government that carried out the law; headed by the president
Chief executive
The president
Legislative branch
Branch of the government that makes laws
Congress
One half f the legislative branch; number of members is determined by population in each state
Senate
One half of the legislative branch; 2 senators from each state, regardless of size
Separation of powers
A fundamental principle of the U.S. Gov as set up in the constitution which divides powers between the 3 branches of gov and allows each to check the powers of others
Electoral college
The presidential electors who meet after the citizens vote for president; they (rather than the public) actually elect the president and Vice President
Citizen
A person born or naturalized of a state of nation who owes allegiance to that state or nation and is entitled to its protection
Ratify
In reference to the constitution, means to vote in the actual constitution or subsequent changes amendments
