Articles of confederation
The meeting called by the states in 1787 to improve the articles of confederation that instead write a new constitution
Constitutional convention
A document that describes how the government will work
Constitution
The system under which each branch of government limits, for checks, powers of the other branches
Checks and balances
The branch that makes laws; to legislate is to make laws
Legislative branch
The branch that carries out, or executes, laws
Executive branch
The branch that interprets laws and saddles disagreements about them; β judicial β comes from the word judge
Judicial branch
And agreement in which each side gives some of what it wants
Compromise
A group of advisers to the president, including the heads of important departments in the executive branch
Cabinet
To accuse or charge a government official, such as a president, with a crime or misconduct
Impeach
To reject a bill and prevent it from becoming a law, a power that belongs only to the president
Veto
A form of government government in which holds power for life
Monarchy
A set of public laws that apply to all people equally, with no one getting special treatment
Rule of law
A form of government in which citizens elect representatives are responsible to the people
Republic
