Constitution
Supreme law of the land
Checks and Balances
Checks: Prevent other branches from gaining too much power
Balances: Divide Vice President powers among each branch so that each one has a different focus and does something different
Executive Branch
President: must be a born citizen, 35 years, and live in U.S. for 14 years. 4 year term.
Legislative Branch
2 houses: House of Representatives and Senate
House of reps: Based on population, reps must be 25 years old, citizen for 7 years, and live in state the represent. 2 year term. Leader: speaker of house
Senate: 2 per state, Must be 30, citizen for 9 years, and live in the state they represent. 6 year term. Leader: vice president
Judicial Branch
9 supreme court justices: president appoints, senate confirms,
Veto
Refuse to sign, President has 10 days to review a law passed by congress. If he does not sign within 10 days, it automatically becomes a law.
Pocket Veto
When the president ignores the bill within 10 days before congress goes on break, thus preventing the bill from becoming a law.
Electoral College
Every elector in a state must vote for the same candidate. Number of electors based on senator and house reps. In order for candidate to win, must win majority of electoral votes.
