what is a constitution
a set of rules that defines the relationship between government and citizen, and defines the limits to a government’s power
what type of constitution does the Uk have?
-uncodified aka not all written in one place
what’s a unitary constitution?
when power is all in one place (e.g. in the UK all the power is in Westminster Parliament
what is rule of law?
-everyone is equally subject to the rule of the land
-even governments and ministers cannot break their own laws
what is the significance of rule of law as part of the constitution?
-it identifies britain as a liberal modern democracy
-ensures powers of gov. are limited
what is parliamentary sovereignty?
-parliament is the supreme authority, the constitution is what parliament says it is and it can be altered by statute law
what’s the significance of parliamentary sovereignty?
-it’s a fundamental and ancient principal of the uk constitution
