Describe the term “labial”
Any sound made with closure or near-closure of the lips are labials
Describe the term “bilabials”
Sounds involving both lips (ex: peer, bin and month)
Describe the term “labiodentals”
Sounds involving the lower lip and upper teeth (ex: fire and vow)
Describe the term “dental”
Sound produced when the tongue is placed against or near the teeth (ex: European French words, sept, temps)
Describe the term “interdental”
Sound produced when the tongue is placed between the teeth (ex: this and thing)
Describe the term “alveolar”
Tongue touching alveolar ridge, found just behind the upper front teeth (ex: top, deer, soap)

Sound produced when the body of the tongue touches the roof of mouth just behind alveolar (ex: show, measure)

Sound produced when the tongue touches highest part of the roof of the mouth (ex: “y” sound in yes)

Sound produced by retracting the tongue or constricting the pharynx (found in dialects of Arabic but not English)
