Henry VII’s most important aim and what he had to do to achieve it…
Dynastic recognition and establishing a Tudor dynasty.
He had to:
Establish his right to the throne, control the nobility and strengthen the crown’s control of England.
Why was henry VII is claim to the throne weak?
He descended from a female line (his mother).
His mother was descended from a once illegitimate branch of Lancastrians.
There were several Yorkists with better claims than Henry.

How did Henry VII legitimise his reign?
Dated his reign to 21st August 1485, the day before the Battle of Bosworth.
Henry VII first convened parliament on 7th November 1485 after his coronation on the 30th October.
On 18 January 1486, Henry VII married Elizabeth of York.
Why did Henry date is reign the day before the battle of Bosworth (21st aug 1485)?
So he could declare all Yorkists traitors and try them for treason. Therefore the crown could take yorkist property.
When was Henry’s coronation and why was it a highly symbolic event?
30th October 1485.
Anointed him by God’s grace and the coronation involved England’s nobles all taking a public oath of loyalty to him.
When was Henry’s first Parliament and why is it important?
7th November 1485
Henry made sure he had already been crowned. This meant his authority was not dependent on parliament.
When did Henry marry Elizabeth of York?
18th November 1486
Why was Henry’s marriage to Elizabeth of York significant?
It united the families of Lancaster and York. Any descendent would come from both houses. A child would mean the Tudor legacy would live on after Henry VII.
Because he was already king, Henry VII made sure his authority was not linked to Elizabeth’s heritage.
