What is Academies?
A
- all public schools in England could become academies
- Gove invited all schools to become an Academy - freeing them from local authority control
- no longer targeted at only failing schools

- more like businesses as they operate in their own interests and rarely have to answer to government
- only checked by OFSTED - once every 5 years
- restrict choices WC pupils have in subjects they can study

What is Increased Tuition Fees?
A
- due to wider cuts in public spending
- September 2012 universities were allowed to charge up to £9000 per year
- government will lend students the money for fees

- those with no parents in work - only 55% were prepared to pay fees of £5000

What are Free Schools?
A
- set up and run by parents, teachers, faith organisations or businesses - funded by the state
- non-profit making and independent
- greater control of how they operate - can rewrite national curriculum
- improve education standards by taking control away from the state

- research from Sweden where 20% are free schools show that they only benefit children from high education backgrounds
- parents who have cultural capital and earning power to take the time to create their own schools

What are Coalition Inequality Policies?
A
- Free school meals - for all children in reception, year one and two
- Pupil Premium - money that the school receives for each pupil from a disadvantaged background

OFSTED found many schools weren’t spending Pupil Premium on those it is supposed to help
