  • Hobbes believed society was ‘nasty, brutish and short’.
  • Burke believed that communities (such as families) are essential to society, belief in hierarchy and the idea of a ‘natural ruling class’. However, higher people in the hierarchy have a duty of care for the people below them. (noblesse oblige)

  • Traditional conservatives such as Burke are in favour of cautious pragmatism, which enables a society to adapt to changing circumstances by introducing moderate reforms.
  • One Nation conservatives adopt a pragmatic ‘middle way’ economic policy that combines market competition with government regulation.

  • E.g managers are paid more than their workers but they are obliged to protect the jobs and economic well being of the workforce.
