An international agreement between the majority of governments around the world. The overall aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens on wildlife does not threaten their survival

- Regulate and monitor international trade in selected species
- Ensure trade does not endanger the survival of wild populations
- Allows some slightly less endangered species be traded subject to permits
