Conservation of energy Flashcards
State the conservation of energy law
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed it can only be transferred from one form to another.
Define Work
Energy transferred by the action of a force
Define Gravitational potential energy
the energy a body has because of its height in a gravitational field
Define kinetic energy
the energy a body has because of its motion
Define elastic potential energy
the energy stored in a body when it is stretched or compressed
Define thermal energy
the energy a body has because of the random thermal motions of its particles
Define electromagnetic energy
energy transferred by electromagnetic waves such as light
Define sound energy
energy transferred by sound waves
Define electrical energy
energy transferred as a result of charges moving through a potential difference
Define chemical energy
the energy released or absorbed when chemical bonds dorm or break
Define nuclear energy
the energy released when nucleons bind together
