Conservation Of Energy Flashcards
Learn about the conservation of energy
What is kinetic energy?
Anything moving has energy in its kinetic energy store.
What is thermal energy?
Any object- the hotter it is the the more energy it has in its store.
What is chemical energy?
Anything that can release energy by a chemical reaction.
What is gravitational potential?
Anything in a gravitational field (that can fall)
What is elastic potential?
Anything stretched like rubber bands.
What is electrostatic energy?
Two charges that attract or repel eachother.
What is magnetic energy?
Two magnets that attract or repel eachother.
What is the equation for kinetic energy?
Kinetic energy= 0.5 × mass(kg) × (speed)²(m/s)²
What is the equation for change in gravitational potential energy?
GPE = mass × gravitational field strength × height
What is the conservation of energy principle?
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed it can only be stored.
What are the 4 energy transfers?
Mechanically- a force acting on an object
Electrically- a charge doing work
By heating- energy transferred from a hotter object to a colder object
By radiation- energy transferred by waves
What is the equation for efficiency?
Efficiency= useful energy transferred by device÷ total energy supplied to device
What is non renewable energy and some examples?
Non renewable energy are fossil fuels and nuclear fuels.
Fossil fuels are natural resources which form underground for thousands of years.
3 main fossil fuels- coal, oil, gas
Advantages of non-renewable energy and disadvantages?
Advantage: reliable, extracting fossil fus are cheap
Disadvantage: environmental problems, contributes to global warming
What is renewable energy and some examples?
It us energy that can never runs out and is renewed.
Examples; bio-fuel, wind, tides, sun
