Conservation of Biodiversity Flashcards

1
Q

What is Surtsey, and the impact thereof?

A

A volcanic island 32km off of Iceland’s southern coast. It has been managed as a 1a Strict Nature Reserve since its genesis in 1967. It has been undisturbed by human activity and therefore is an example of uninterrupted lithospheric succession.

Q

What is an example of conservation in harmony with economic development?

A

Currently in Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest, there are conservation areas that also act as sources of metals and timber.
Over 3.4million ha of the Amazon are part of extractive reserves, but the Alto Jurua reserve has small deforestation occurring but at a far decreased frequency.

Q

How was the Iberian Lynx conserved in situ?

A

In the dehesa (Spain) and montano (Portugal) it was restored along with its main prey - the rabbit. Both of their habitats were also largely regenerated to prevent.

Q

How was the Iberian Lynx conserved ex situ?

A

There was a captive breeding program in the USA, where once they were old enough they were taken back to Spain/Portugal and reintroduced.

Q

What are eco-regions?

Q

How do HICs conserve biodiversity differently to LICs?

A

HICs on average have over twice the % of their land under conservation programmes as LICs do, however each km2 of land is approximately 40% more expensive to conserve due to increased land costs.
