Conservation and Preservation Flashcards
what is conservation?
maintenance/ improvement of biodiversity involving human intervention
- maintaining species, genetic diversity and also a range of habitats and ecosystems
what is perseveration?
maintenance of habitats and ecosystems in their present condition and minimises human impact
what are some conservation strategies?
- creating national parks
- zoos/botanic gardens
- raise carrying capacity by providing extra food
- control poachers
- vaccinate individuals against disease
- short-cutting succession and re-establish original community
- replace a disrupted community with a slightly different community
what are threats to biodiversity?
- over-exploitation of wild populations
- habitat disruption and fragmentation
- introduction of non-native species
what are the three reasons for conservation?
ethical, economic and social
what are ethical reasons?
- every organism has the right to survive and live in the way they have become adapted
- humans have responsibility to look at species
what are economical reasons?
natural ecosystems provide us with: food, fuel, timber and fertilisation of soil and you can recycle the nutrients
- ecosystems provide goods such as fish for free
- genetic diversity may be needed to breed disease resistance and improved yield in animals and plants and drought tolerance in plants
- ecotourism
what are social reasons?
- aesthetic reasons
- peoples well being , mental, emotional and physical
