Conservation Flashcards
Conservation
Keeping or protecting of something/ valued resources from change loss or damage
Conservation in situ
Conserving animal in its normal environment ; minisming human impact
1) LEGISLATION: laws to stop activities such as hunting and logging
+ ppl can be prosecuted
- difficult to enforce
-country specific
2) CONSERVATION PARKS: protected areas such as national parks
+ areas provided scientific research
+biodiversity permanently protected
- protected organism leave reserves
- subjected to illegal activity such as leaving litter
3) REPOPULATION : rebuilding lost population or habitats
+ biodiversity is returned to areas and destructive effect of humans is reversed
- profit from agriculture lost
-some habitat destruction is irreversible
Conservation ex situ
Conserving an endangered species by activities that take place outside its normal environment
1) WILDLIFE ZOOS - captive breeding of animals take place
+ can be controlled by vets by IVF
+ organism protected from predators
-genetic diversity limited so lack of variation so less adaptation
- if offspring is reintroduced to the wild they may be rejected
2) SEED BANKS- preserve and store seeds for decades
+ can be collected without disturbing ecosystems
+ plants can be bred asexually
-plants bred asexual produce genetic diveiery further
-can cause some disturbance
Convention of international trade
Regulation and monitoring of specific endangered species of plants and animals
Trade in less endangered can be permitted
HARD TO ENFORCE AND SMUGGLING
Rio convention
Conservation and sustainibility
Strategy 1: wildlife parks and seed banks
Strategy 2: environmental impact assessment
Avoid impact on local biodiversity , Carried out by local planning authority
Undetand impact of all developments
