Post-war society had seen the nation begin a transition from an agrarian to an industrial society. 1920s = boom in consumerism as the economy grew by an average of 5% a year during these years.

Demands of war production → new opportunities for blacks in Northern industrial cities. Returning veterans refused to accept their pre-war position of inferiority
