Consequences of Terrorism Flashcards
Impact on Individuals/Communities - Death & Injury
When a terrorist attack occurs, e.g. a bombing, victims who are involved can get seriously injured or killed.
For example, the Manchester attack in 2017 killed 12 people and injured 250.
Impact on Individuals/Communities - Islamophobia
When a group is seen as being “linked” to terrorism, then a group may face discrimination and hate crime.
For example, Islamophobic attacks soared more than 500% in Greater Manchester in the month after the bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in 2017.
Impact on Countries & Governments - Economic
When terror attacks happen, even in a different country, people get fearful and fear the same could happen in their own country. To keep people safe the government will spend billions of pounds on security, like investing in counter-terrorism police forces, CCTV and bomb detection technology.
For example, the UK counter terrorism budget is over £700 million a year.
Impact on Countries & Governments - Refugees
When an area is plagued by terrorism, many people living there choose to flee to “safer” countries. The influx of refugees cause a number of issues for the countries receiving them as they are often underprepared for the sudden arrival of so many people.
For example, more than 1 million refugees have fled to EU countries, such as Germany, in recent years.
International Impact - International Relations
When faced with a common threat, like a terrorist group, countries have to work together by taking joint military action, imposing sanctions, and sharing resources to fight back against that terrorist group.
For example, the threat of ISIS led all 15 countries in the UN Security Council to put their differences aside and join forced to fight and ultimately defeat ISIS.
