Consenting procedures Flashcards
Colposcopy
D - Large microscope used to get a closer and more accurate look into the cervix
R - Abnormal cells were found during your smear test. This is usually caused by a virus called HPV, it is a very common virus that is spread by skin to skin contact, usually transmitted sexually. This virus can lead to a change of cells.
T - Before: Usually lasts ~20mins. Eat + take paracetamol (if u wish) few hours before appt.
- During: Like a smear test you are required to spread your legs.
• A speculum will then be used
• The colposcope does not enter your body but sits between your legs
• It should not be more uncomfortable than having a smear test - if it at any point feels too uncomfortable let the dr know and the
examination can be stopped
• The dr may also apply come liquid which
may sting a little bit
• The dr may also need to take a small sample of tissue for testing which you will be told about
• Depending on findings the dr may also
offer the possibility of Rx which they will
discuss and we have provided more information about this in a leaflet we will give at the end
- After: We recommend that you bring someone with you to help you home
• If you are by yourself we recommend that you stay here for a short while before you go home
• Depending on how the procedure goes we may keep you in for a few hours to check on you
• You may experience some mild pain and
bleeding which should settle
• Arrange FU If they take any samples from you, you can go to GP in 3-4w time to discuss the result
R - may experience spotting or very light bleeding in next day or two. If biopsy taken: vaginal pain for 1-2d. bleeding, dark discharge. Use pad to catch any discharge or blood, avoid tampons, douching, vaginal intercourse for a week.

Colonoscopy
D - Procedure where we insert a long thin tube with small camera at the end of it inserted via the back passage + images views on a screen to see the presence of polyps and lesions. It is a safe procedure.
R - Look for any abnormalities which maybe causing your syx such as polyps, inflammation, any signs of cancer. Syx of rectal bleeding, change in bowel habits, iron deficiency anaemia, FH/Hx of polyps or colon cancer. Chronic + unexplained abdo or rectal pain, and abnormal XR (barium enema or CT).
T - BEFORE: Oral intake 3-4d = stop eating any high fibre foods. 1d = no solids, clear fluids only. 4hrs = NBM.
DURING: PR exam + sedative given before procedure. It is 20-45mins procedure where you will lie on your side on a bed as tube is inserted. Air is passed through to inflate your bowel (can make you feel bloated/needing toilet). Dr will be able to see bowel on a screen: see any changes in bowel, may take biopsy, anything abnormal may be removed at time e.g. polyp
AFTER: No driving, no alcohol, operating machinery. Keep someone with you for 24hrs. In recovery area after procedure. FU appt for biopsy results.
R - Bleeding, abdo discomfort, sedation SE (memory loss, drowsiness). Uncommon: perforation (this will require further operation), infection. Failure to complete procedure.
A - early dx + rx, improved QoL
