A
  • Make seniors aware
  • Find alternative person able to consent
  • Observe consent
  • Observe Procedure
  • Offer to assist in case
  • Reflect on ISCP / Portfolio (+/- work based assessment)

A

According to the mental capacity act 2005 The patient has to be able to:

  • Understant the information
  • Retain the information
  • use the information / weigh up the information
  • communicate their decision

When consenting a patient who appears confused what must you do?

A
  1. Assess capacity
  2. If they don’t have capacity, determine if this is due to an acute and reversible case or a chronic cause
  3. if reversible, and the surgery can be delayed, this should be delayed until confusion has resolved or cause reversed

  1. You would act in the patients best interest whilst taking In to account
    - advanced directives
    - lasting power of attorney
    - views of the family
    - patients views
    - whether the capacity is temporary or reversible

what are the different types of consent form?

A
  1. Consent form 1 - patient agrees to investigation or treatment (Adults with capacity)
  2. consent form 2 - Parental agreement to investigation or treatment (children)
  3. consent form 3 - patient / parental consent for procedures where the patient is alert throughout the procedure
  4. Consent form 4 - adults who are unable to consent for investigation or treatment

A

the management decision is made by the doctor in the patients best interest, unless

  • the patient has a signed advanced directive
  • the relative has lasting power or attorney.

A
  • If over the age of 16, children are deemed to be compitent and able to give consent.
  • if <16 they are able to consent for procedures If they are deemed Gillick competent (understand, retain, weight up and communicate decision)
  • always encourgage the child to involve the parents
