What are norms?
Behaviour and attitudes which are considered normal
What are values?
Things that people consider important to them
What is the main idea of consensus structuralism?
- Society has vital institutions
- Institutions work interdependently
- All institutions work as one
- This is known as the organic analogy
What does Durkheim believe?
Society is much more important than individuals, therefore everyone must ensure society functions and survives
What is collective conscience?
A general agreement surrounding values and norms of any society
What is value consensus?
Set of shared, beliefs, ideas and attitudes which operate as a unifying force in society
What is social solidarity?
Integration of people into society through shared values, common culture, and social ties that bind them together
How do we reinforce VC, CC and SS, to prevent atrophy?
Individuals are subjected to positive and negative sanctions.
E.g. jail as punishment, money as reward.
