Connectors in Industry Flashcards
What is another name for NL4 cable
SpeakON connector
Definition of Volts
Potential difference between 2 points in a circuit
How and why should you clean a soldering iron before you use it?
Clean using solder as the flux contained in the solder has acid in that will clean off any oxidised debris on the iron.
A clean solder iron helps to transfer heat better.
What are pins 1, 2 and 3 used for in an XLR cable
1 = Ground/Shield
2 = Positive/Hot
3 = Negative/Cold
Describe, technically, what happens when the solder is applied to a copper wire
When heated copper’s spare electrons will bond to tin which has a low melting point. Forming a new copper alloy which is more resistant and easier to solder.
Whats the differences between XLR and DMX cables?
DMX is used for lighting. XLR cables are used for audio.
Different resistance - XLR 75ohm(low impedance), DMX 110-120ohm
Different shielding - XLR has a braided earth whereas DMX has a ground conductor and a mylar metalised shield.
Define impedance
electrical impedance is the measure of the opposition that a circuit presents to a current when a voltage is applied. Impedance extends the concept of resistance to alternating current (AC) circuits. Impedance possesses both magnitude and phase, unlike resistance, which has only magnitude.
What are the correct colours used in PAT testing for live, earth and neutral?
Brown = Live(Remember the colour of your pants will be if you touch it!)
Blue = Neutral
Yellow/Green = Earth
What cable connectors are suitable for a 1.5 mm2 according to the CSA(Canadian Standards Association)
0 – 15 Amp = IEC, 13Amp, 15Amp
What cable connectors are suitable for a 2.5 mm2 according to the CSA(Canadian Standards Association)
15 – 20 Amp. =16Amp Cform, Powercon.
What cable connectors are suitable for a 4.0 mm2 according to the CSA(Canadian Standards Association)
Larger Powercon, 32Amp Cform.
Define Voltage
The potential difference in energy between two points in a circuit.
Define Current
The measurement of the volume flow of charged particles passing a point per second.
Define Resistance
The obstruction to electrical potential in a material.
Define Watt
The energy rating OR capacity of an electrical appliance to do work.
