LAN
A network that connects computers and other devices in a relatively small area, typically a single building or a group of buildings
Characteristics of LAN
The access method, which is involved in determining who gets to use the network and when they get to use it
WAN
A telecommunication network or computer that extends over a large geographical distance.
They are often established with leased telecommunication circuits
The internet is a WAN
A network of bank cash dispensers is a WAN
LANs are connected to WANs
WANs can be connected together using internet, leased line or safalite links
MAN
Network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic area or region larger than a LAN but smaller than the area covered by a WAN.
Extremely efficient and provides fast communication using fibre optic cables
Helpdesk
A service providing information and support to computer users especially within a company
Benefits:
Single place to report issues
Ticket generation
Provides a systematic approach
Limitations:
Loss of control over training
Lack of concern for customers
Remote personnel
