Connective Tissue Terms List 2 Flashcards
Areolar, loose ctp
Location, function
Location: within and deep to skin, under epithelial lining of digestive, respiratory, urinary tracts; between muscles, around joints, blood vessels, nerves
Function: cushions organs, provide support but permits independent movement
Adipose tissue, loose
Location, function
Location: deep to skin especially at sides, buttock, breasts, padding around eyes and kidneys
Function: provides padding and cushions shock, insulates heat, stores energy
Dense regular connective tissue
Location, function
Location: between skeletal muscles and skeleton, between bones or stabilizing positions of internal organs, covering skeletal muscles
Function: provides firm attachment, conducts pull of muscles, reduces friction between muscles, stabilizes positions of bones
Dense irregular Connective tissue
Location, function
Location: capsules of visceral organs, periostea and perichondrium, nerve and muscle sheaths, dermis
functions: provide strength to resist forces from many directions, helps prevent over expansion of organs such as the urinary bladder
Hyaline cartilage
Location, function
Location: between tips of ribs and bones of sternum, covering bone surfaces at synovial joints, supporting larynx, trachea, and bronchi, forming part of nasal septum
Function: provide Steph but somewhat flexible support reduces friction between bony surfaces
 fibrocartilage
Location, function
Location: pads with a knee joint, between pubic bones and pelvis, intervertebral discs
Functions resist compression prevent bone to bone contact limits movement
Elastic cartilage
Location, function
Location: auricle Of external ear, epiglottis, auditory canal, cuneiform cartilages of larynx
function: provide support, but tolerates distortion without damaging returns to original shape
