Connective Tissue Flashcards
Areolar
Loose connective tissue
Binds body parts together
Location: throughout body, between tissues
Regular dense fibrous
Collagen fibers predominant
Makes up tendons and ligaments
Location: ligaments and tendons
Elastic connective tissue
Allows stretching
Location: lung tissue, walls of artery/vein
Adipose
Lies the outer boarder of the cell
High energy, protection
Location: breasts, around kidneys, behind eyeballs
Hyaline cartilage
Supports and cushions
Cannot be compressed
Covers ends of long bones
Location: ribs, nose, trachea, larynx
Fibrocartilage
Less firm
Thick collagen fibers predominant
Location: intervertebral discs, disc of knee joint
Elastic cartilage
Maintains structure while allows flexibility
Location: pinna of ear, epiglottis
Compact bone
Structure and support
Bony matrix
Location: found in most solid bones, long bones
Ground substance
Fills space between cells
Ground substance+fibers= matrix
Collagen
Thick fibers, tough but allows some flexibility
Elastic
Fine and can stretch
Reticular
Provides strength and support
Fibroblasts
Make fiber, dark and flat on elastic fibers
Macrophages
Phagocytic, cleans up broken bone
Chondrocytes
Cells found in cartilage, lay in lacunae (spaces)
