Connective Tissue Flashcards
What are the two categories of connective tissue cells?
Fixed cells and free cells
What is the function of fibroblasts in connective tissue?
Fibroblasts produce ground substance, collagen fibers, and growth factors. They exist in active and passive forms.
What is the role of macrophages in connective tissue?
Macrophages phagocytize foreign materials and dead cells and activate the immune system.
What substances do mast cells secrete?
Mast cells secrete heparin (inhibits blood clotting) and histamine (vasodilation).
What are the two main types of fibrous connective tissue?
Loose connective tissue (Areolar, Reticular, Adipose)
Dense connective tissue (Dense Regular, Dense Irregular
Where is areolar tissue found, and what is its function?
Areolar tissue is found under epithelia, between muscles, and in passageways for nerves and blood vessels. It provides support and nourishment.
What is the function of adipose tissue?
Adipose tissue stores energy, provides insulation, and cushions organs.
