Connective tissue Flashcards
Connective tissue
-most abundant and widely distributed
Connective tissue functions
-enclose/separate tissues
-interconnect other types of tissues (tendons and ligaments)
-support and movement (bones)
-storage of compounds (fat, minerals)
-cushion/insulate (fat)
-transport fluids/materials (blood)
-protection/defense (cells of immune system)
Connective tissue unique features
1) all derived from mesenchyme (type of embryonic tissue)
2) different degrees of vascularity (blood flow)
3) consists of cells separated by extracellular matrix (nonliving material)
Extracellular matrix
Non living material secreted by the cells of connective tissue
1) ground substances
2) protein fibers
Ground substance
Gel-like mixture of starch protein and water
Proteoglycans=major component
-proteins with starchy branches
-trap large amounts of water
Protein fibers
Collagen fibers (most abundant):
-strongest, flexible
-more present, the denser and firmer
Elastic fibers:
-stretch and recoil; made of elastin
-provides elasticity of skin, lungs, arteries
Reticular fibers:
-fill spaces between tissues and organs
-cradle and support organs
4 types connective tissue
1) connective tissue proper
2) cartilage
3) bone
4) blood
