Connective Tissue Flashcards
What are the 4 types of tissue?
Epithelial Tissue
Connective Tissue
Muscular Tissue
Neural Tissue
What are the three main classifications of connective tissue?
1) Proper
2) Fluid
3) Supporting
What are the two types of connective tissue proper?
Loose
Dense
What are the two types of fluid connective tissue?
Blood
Lymph
What are the two types of supporting connective tissue?
Cartilage
Bone
Types of loose connective tissue:
areolar tissue
adipose tissue
reticular tissue
Types of dense connective tissue:
dense regular
dense irregular
elastic
What are the two types of fluid connective tissue?
Blood
Lymph
What are the parts of blood?
thrombocytes (platelets)
leukocytes (white blood cells)
erythrocytes (red blood cells)
plasma
What are the two types of supporting connective tissue?
Cartilage
Bone
Types of cartilage:
hyaline
elastic
fibrous
What does connective tissue do?
structural framework
transporting fluid/ dissolved materials
protects organs
connects other tissues
stores energy (fat)
defends body from microrganisms
What is areolar tissue, and where is it found?
binds skin to muscle, flexible, deep dermis
What is adipose tissue, and where is it found?
fat (adipocytes), stores energy, cushion/insulator, surrounds organs
What is brown fat?
highly vascularized, excess in infants/young children, quick source of heat
What is reticular tissue, and where is it found?
Net like filtering tissue, scaffolding framework, liver, spleen, tonsils,
What is regular tissue?
tightly, densely packed fibers, strong
tendons (muscle to bone)
ligaments (bone to bone)
What is elastic tissue?
Dense but has elasticity, some stretch, at end of tendon where muscle connects to bone.
What is irregular tissue?
not linear, fibrous capsules around organs, glands, skin, periosteum, perichondrium, strength/support
What is the matrix of cartilage?
Gelatinous
What is the primary molecule in bone?
Calcium phosphate
What is hyaline cartilage and where?
support, flexible, reduces friction
between sternum and ribs
nose
trachea
larynx
bronchi
elbows
knees
What is elastic cartilage and where?
auricle of ear, epiglottis, auditory canal
What is fibrous cartilage and where?
resist compression, absorb shock
connects ligament to bone
between bone
meniscus
between pubic bones
between spinal disks
What are the two types of bone?
compact (cortical) and spongy (trabecular)
What are the three types of fascia?
superficial fascia
deep fascia
subserous fascia
Where/what is superficial fascia?
between skin and underlying organs
(areolar and adipose)
Where/what is deep fascia?
strong, fibrous internal framework
dense irregular connective tissue
bound to capsules, tendons, ligaments, etc.
Where/what is subserous fascia?
between serous membrane (lines organs) and deep fascia
areolar tissue
