What is a coalescence?
Two contiguous consonants are replaced by a single one which shares features of the two original ones.
What is an assimilation?
The realisation of a phoneme which is more like the realisation of a nearby phoneme. Can be progressive or regressive.
What is an elision?
The deletion of a sound.
What is a liaison?
The articulation of an “extra” sound between two words to make the articulation of a sequence easier.
What is an epenthesis?
The insertion of a sound to the middle of a word.
What is progressive assimilation?
The first consonant affects the second.
What is regressive assimilation?
The second consonant affects the first.
