  • tender, pre-auricular lymphadenopathy

  • unilateral disease

  • rapid adenovirus immunoassay - 2 visible lines equal positive
  • cell culture - bacterial or viral isolation
  • Gram stain - visualisation of bacterial organisms
  • polymerase chain reaction - amplified viral or bacterial DNA
  • ocular pH - target pH is 7
