Bacterial conjunctivitis
A
- Starts in one eye but can spread to both
- Thick “pus” yellow, white or green

Bacterial conjunctivitis treatment
A
- Erythromycin 5 mg/gram ointment (1/2 inch qid for 5-7 days)
- Trimethoprim/polymyxin B 0.1%-10,000 units/gram drops (1-2 drops qid for 5-7 days)

Viral conjunctivitis (pink eye)
A
- Contagious
- Starts with one eye, second eye involved within 24-48 hrs

Pink eye treatment
A
- Vasoconstrictor/Antihistamine Combination (Naphazoline/Pheniramine)
- Antihistamine with mast cell stabilizing properties (Azelastine, Ketoifen, Olopatadine)

Allergic conjunctivitis
A
-Intense itching, hyperemia, tearing, chemosis, and eyelid edema

Toxic conjunctivitis
A
- Direct damage to ocular tissues from preservatives or medications
- Redness, edema, mucus discharge, swollen eyelids, thickened eyelids
- Treatment: discontinue topical meds containing preserved topical corticosteroids; use short course loteorednol
