Elongate, dry cones with 3- 6 scales. Look like a flower. Scale like needles.
Calocedrus decurrens.
Scale like needles, dry, globose cones. Break up into pieces with four petal like structures and a knob in the middle.
Xanthocyparis nootkatensis
Rounded, scale like leaves. Spherical cones, bluish.
Juniperus scopulorum,
Scale like leaves but with cones that look more like your average pine cone. Cones have 10-12 scales.
Thuja plicata.
Twigs almost entirely covered by needles moving in an upward direction. Needles flat, stomata on one side.
Abies amabilis.
Large visible twigs, girthy. Flat needles in one plane, stomata on bottom.
Abies grandis.
Large resin ducts, stomata on both side. Large central row on top. Flat needles in all directions. Rounded buds on the tops of twigs.
Abies lasiocarpa.
Hockey stick leaves- sharp curve near point of attachment. Two rows of stomata on top of leaf. Leaves not entirely on the horizontal plane but not entirely whorly either.
Abies procera
Deciduous, leaves soft and in small tufts.
Larix occidentalis
Spiky, sharp, stiff needles. Peg like leaf scars. Scales of cones are thin, paper like, golden brown and point upward. Airy cone. Leaves fall of easily.
Picea sitchensis
2 needles per bundle, small asymmetrical phone.
Pinus contorta
5 needles per bundle, bundles fall in a way that makes it look like a tail,. Long, large cone.
Pinus monticola
3 needles per bundle, symmetrical medium cone
Pinus ponderosa
Big bracts on cones.
Pseudotsuga menziessi
Leaves have varied length. Grey on bottom of leaves from stomata. Needles almost in one plane. Small, airy cones.
Tsuga heterophylla
